The Syria You Don't See

A few weeks ago, Yahoo! started offering its own news reports from around the world. Yahoo! Hot Zone is a new interactive news web site, created by Kevin Sites and a small team of professional journalists. The idea behind Hot Zone is to cover armed conflicts around the world, and the goal is "to put a human face on the issues surrounding global conflict; to show you the unheard voices and the unreported stories about real people, their triumphs and their suffering."

Having already covered several countires (very interesting reports from Lebanon and Iran), Hot Zone is now reporting from Syria. In case you are wondering (like I did) why they are covering Syria (where, thanks God, no armed conflict is going on), scroll down the About page and read Sites' definition of armed conflict as adopted from the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.

Sites' first article from Damascus, entitled "Syria on the Brink" is accompanied by a photo essay and a video clip from the dance floor at Marmar, giving the impression that despite the political turmoil their country is going through, Syrians are still full of life.

Watch out for more interesting dispatches about "The Syria You Don't See."
